To be fair it is nothing like Switzerland but it is an amazing place to hike, explore and take in nature and history. How to get there: Drive via the A2 highway or take a train from Riga Central Station (approximately 1 hour). Bus is also possible.
Highlights: Turaida Castle, Gutmanis Cave, and the Sigulda bobsleigh track.
2. Cēsis
Cēsis is a charming medieval town with a rich history and beautiful architecture. It’s perfect for those who enjoy exploring ancient ruins and quaint streets. This little town has become a real hipster haven, with chic cafes and an artistic vibe. Also the site of one of the largest mass suicides in medival Europe.

How to get there: Drive via the A2 highway or take a bus from Riga’s bus station (approximately 2 hours).

3. Jūrmala

How to get there: Drive via the A10 highway or take a train from Riga Central Station (approximately 30 minutes). Cycling is by far the nicest way to reach the beach.

4. Līgatne
Līgatne is known for its stunning nature and the unique Līgatne Nature Trails, where you can observe native wildlife in their natural habitat. Home to some really nice restaurants as well. A good place to stay the night and soak up the vibes.

How to get there: Drive via the A2 highway or take a bus from Riga (approximately 1.5 hours).
Highlights: Līgatne Nature Trails, the old paper mill, and the charming village atmosphere.
5. Daugavpils
Daugavpils is Latvia's second-largest city, rich in history and culture, and offers a unique blend of Latvian and Russian heritage. Home of Mark Rothko and one of the most Russian speaking areas in Latvia. Although modernising, there is a very post Soviet feel to this city.
Distance from Riga: 230 km (about 2.5 hours by car).
How to get there: Drive via the A6 highway or take a train from Riga Central Station (approximately 3 hours).
Highlights: Daugavpils Fortress, Mark Rothko Art Centre, and the beautiful Daugava River.
6. Rundāle Palace
Rundāle Palace is often referred to as the "Versailles of Latvia." This stunning baroque palace is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. Have a romatic day trip from Riga to this awesome Baroque palace!

How to get there: Drive via the A7 highway or take a bus from Riga to Bauska, then a taxi (approximately 1.5 hours). Summer time there should be direct buses.

Bauska is known for its historical significance and the impressive Bauska Castle, which dates back to the 15th century. Small town feel.

How to get there: Drive via the A7 highway or take a bus from Riga’s bus station (approximately 1 hour).
Highlights: Bauska Castle, the confluence of the Mūsa and Daugava rivers, and local markets.
8. Kemeri National Park
Perfect for nature lovers, Kemeri National Park features stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and beautiful bogs. It's a great spot for hiking and birdwatching.

How to get there: Drive via the A10 highway or take a train to Jūrmala and then a bus (approximately 1 hour).

How to get there: Drive via the A10 highway or take a bus from Riga (approximately 2.5 hours).
Highlights: Kuldīga's Old Town, Venta Rapid, and the historic brick bridge.
